Abstract

As transmembrane proteins that regulate ion flow across cell membrane, ion channels are accessible for pharmacological intervention and comprise a large class of drug targets. However, the role of ion channels in brain tumor is largely unexplored. Our group uses multi-disciplinary approaches including Drosophila and mouse genetics, xenograft modeling, cell biology and electrophysiology to define the mechanisms by which ion channels regulate brain development and tumorigenesis, and develop ion channel drugs to treat brain cancer. I will discuss our recent discovery of functionally cooperative potassium and chloride channels that are critical for brain tumor growth, which led to the re-purposing of a FDA-approved anti-psychotic drug with therapeutic efficacy for treating brain tumor in mice and a human patient.
